Texas Lottery Jackpot Wins $257 Million

 


A single ticket sold in Leander, a suburb of Austin, wins an estimated $257 million jackpot for the January 19 Mega Millions drawing. It is the second largest prize paid to a single winner in U.S. history, and the biggest prize awarded to a Texan. The ticket matched the winning numbers in all six prize tiers, including the Mega Ball number.

Lottery Executive Director Linda Cloud announces that Lotto Texas tickets are selling at an average rate of 41,941 per minute – a new one-day record. Sales reach an astounding $32.2 million leading up to the drawing, and more than $28 million on the day of the draw.

The first Lotto Texas winner claims a $53 million jackpot. The two six-of-six matching tickets, the Victory Trust of Brownsville and the Perkov Family Trust of Grand Prairie, each choose the Cash Value Option payout, which totals $16.2 million.

Lotto Texas begins offering a new Quick Pick game that allows players to select their own numbers. The new game also increases the jackpot payout from 50 percent to 55 percent, and expands the field of numbers from 50 to 54.

With more than $4.8 billion in sales, the Lottery sets a new record for total annual contributions to Texas public schools and veterans. The new record is largely due to increased ticket sales and an increase in the percentage of prizes paid in cash.

Governor George W. Bush appoints Houston businessman Walter Criner to a six-year term on the Lottery Commission. His appointment replaces Dallas attorney Anthony Sadberry, who resigned from the post. Under passed Sunset legislation, the number of Lottery Commissioners is increased from three to five public members.

In April, the Lottery introduces $20 Million Supreme, the U.S. lottery industry's first scratch-ticket game at the $100 price point, with top cash prizes starting at $150. The game's innovative design offers more than $829 million in total cash prizes, with four of the highest top-cash prizes ever offered in a scratch ticket in the state.
